Dr. Joseph Kunnel completed his dental education and then a Masters in Advanced General Dentistry at Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago. He received his specialty training in Orthodontics at the University of Illinois and attained a Masters Degree in Oral Biology. He concurrently pursued a PhD in Bone Biology at Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Kunnel is currently an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He has taught at varying capacities at Northwestern University Dental School (1995 to 2001), Department of Orthodontics at Marquette University (2005), Department of Orthodontics at the University of Illinois (2005 to 2007).

Dr. Kunnel has been the recipient of several awards including the "Teaching Fellowship Award" from the American Association of Orthodontists, the "Clinical Scientist Award" from the National Institute of Health, and the "Howard Hughes Award". He has published several peer reviewed scientific papers and lectures at many national and international meetings.

Dr. Kunnel is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and an active member of the American Association of Orthodontics, International Association of Dental Research, Chicago Dental Society, and American Dental Association.
