About Orthodontics

About Orthodontics and Orthodontist in India
India Dental Clinic provides general information about orthodontics, orthodontist and orthodontic treatment in India. Orthodontics is one of the eight recognized specialties in dentistry. An orthodontist is a specialist in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Teeth (and as a result, faces) are permanently changed by orthodontic treatment. The practice of orthodontics involves the design, application and control of corrective appliances and braces that are used to treat and correct these problems (known as bad bite, crooked teeth, openbite, overbite, underbite, crossbite, protrusion, and diastema) so that optimum dental function, stability and facial esthetics are achieved. Therefore, it is very important that the treatment be properly done. An orthodontist is required to first attend college, then complete a four-year graduate dental program and finally complete an additional 2-3 year orthodontic residency program. This advanced training included topics such as growth and development, genetics, biomechanics, TMJ (jaw) problems, and anatomy, as well as the application and adjustment of braces and removable appliances (retainers). Orthodontists are dental specialists who have limited their practices exclusively to the treatment of orthodontic problems.

When is the best time to begin Orthodontic Treatment?
Most countries recommend first orthodontic consultation for all the children by the age of seven. Luckily, an early orthodontic screening examination allows orthodontists to best determine the optimum time before the problems get too difficult. This does not mean that all children need treatment at this age, but it does allow the assessment of each individual case to determine who might benefit from early intervention. Fortunately, many young patients don't need anything more than observation while their permanent teeth grow into place. However, some young patients may have problems that will not, or should not wait. Final correction is considered later when all the permanent teeth are in place.

Did you know that most orthodontic problems are inherited and cannot be totally prevented? Orthodontics is not only limited to children, while as per general data about 1/4 of orthodontic patients are adults, so it often is at India Dental Clinic. It helps orthodontist identify current or anticipated dental problems and determine the best time for treatment. This is also the time to evaluate any ongoing oral habits such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing, or finger sucking that lead to openbite condition. In some cases, early intervention can prevent the need for future treatment, or at least reduce the complexity of future treatment, and may reduce the need for extractions. Ultimately it will help ensure better overall results.

What are the goals of any orthodontic procedure?

How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
Braces use steady, gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. Although there are different types of braces, the idea behind all of them is to use bands to exert tension on teeth and gradually realign their position. The brackets are placed by orthodontists place on your teeth, and, in certain cases, inserts spacers onto the back teeth. The archwire that connects them, are the main components, are then inserted through the brackets, where they are held in place by ties. The archwire is shaped to move your teeth into your ideal smile and bite. The archwire is connected to the brackets by small rubber bands (elastics). Pick the elastic colors you want, or go for invisible! In some cases, teeth need to be extracted to make room for the future alignment of teeth.

What about Teeth Straightening (Orthodontic) Treatment in Adults?
“Braces aren't just for kids anymore”, is the standard statement. As per the general data on age 7-77 years, about one fourth orthodontic treatment seekers are adults. Tooth alignment can be changed at any age if your gums and bone structure are healthy. By gradually straightening your teeth, your jaw and lips will align better making it easier to brush your teeth and improve overall dental health. A beautiful smile means more than just pleasing cosmetics and self-esteem. Straight teeth play an important role in your oral health. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and less prone to decay and periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment / straightening of teeth in adults at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.

Good news! It is surprising just how many people are correcting their congenital and developmental deformities in adulthood.  With a little care on your part, you can have "perfect teeth" all your life too. The new techniques and appliances at India Dental Clinic greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, shorten orthodontic treatment time and may allow you to choose from several options.

Your easy to afford orthodontic treatment options in India may include metal dental braces, translucent braces or transparent aligners (Invisalign) that can be worn to improve mild cases of misaligned teeth. Adult orthodontics is somewhat different than children's orthodontics.  This is because with adults the bone is not always in a state of flux, and it takes somewhat longer to move the teeth. You can discuss the option with orthodontist in India as other options in instant orthodontics in India also need to be understood.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take?
The orthodontic treatment time at orthodontic center in India varies from patient to patient. It is directly dependent on the severity of the patient's problems, the biological response to treatment, and the patient's compliance during treatment. In addition, the patient's skeletal, dental, and emotional maturation and the development of the dental arches, jaws and face are also influencing factors on the overall treatment time. It is just a normal eventuality for a patient to lose a retainer or break a retainer. But he/she should be prompt enough to call the treating orthodontist office in India and have a replacement one made.

What all is involved in Orthodontic Treatment?

A. There are fixed appliances that include:-
Braces:  These are the most common of the fixed orthodontic appliances.  The components consist of dental braces, bands, wires and/or brackets. The process of application is that the bands are fixed around the teeth or tooth and used as anchors for the appliance, while brackets are most often bonded to the front of the tooth. Then the arch wires are passed through the brackets and attached to the bands and when tightened the arch wire puts tension on the teeth, gradually moving them to their proper position. Today's braces are available in various shapes, sizes and light-weight to suit the style statement of kids and adults alike.

Special fixed appliances:  For the thumb sucking or tongue thrusting kids (as also adults) these appliances are their nightmares.  These are attached to the teeth by bands and are very uncomfortable during meals. These successfully act in breaking the habit, but are only as a last resort.

Fixed space maintainers: There are times when a baby tooth is lost prematurely. In order to keep the space open until the permanent tooth erupts, a space maintainer is placed. A band is attached to the tooth next to the empty space, and a wire is extended to the tooth on the other side of the space.

B. Then there are removable appliances that include:-
Removable space maintainers:  These are made of acrylic base and fit over the jaw and serve the same function as fixed space maintainers. But to keep the space open between the specified teeth, there are plastic or wire branches.

Jaw repositioning appliances:  These devices are also called by other name as “splints” and worn on either the upper or lower jaw. These devices help in moving the jaw to close in a more favorable position. These are often used for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).

Lip and cheek bumpers: In situations when lip and cheek muscles are exerting pressure on teeth, these bumpers are so designed to maintain the distance and relieve that pressure.

Palatal expander: This plastic plate is fixed by screws over the roof of the mouth. Designed to apply outward pressure on the arch of the upper jaw, the device help it open lengthwise and widen the palatal area.

Removable retainers: After the completion of orthodontic treatment, these devices are worn on the roof of the mouth. These devices prevent shifting of the teeth to their previous position. They can also be modified and used to prevent thumb sucking.

Headgear: Headgear is a device in which a strap is placed around the back of the head and attached to a metal wire in front, or face bow. Its purpose is to stop the upper jaw from growing, hence preventing or correcting an overbite. Headgear slows the growth of the upper jaw, and holds the back teeth where they are while the front teeth are pulled back.

Aligners: These are relatively new alternative to traditional braces for adults. A set or series of aligners are used to move teeth in the same way that fixed appliances work. There are no metal wires and brackets. Since these are made of special plastic material, these aligners (or trays) are virtually invisible and are removed for eating, brushing and flossing.

What is Combined Surgical Orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics is also known as orthognathic surgery. No matter how good the orthodontist is, he or she cannot move teeth anywhere the bone will not follow. An orthodontist repositions teeth, while oral and maxillofacial surgeon uses orthognathic surgery to reposition one or both jaws. Just as "orthodontics" means "straight teeth", "orthognathic" means "straight jaws". One of the largest advantages of surgery combined with orthodontic treatment is the marked improvement most patients have in their facial appearance after treatment. In fact, because moving the jaws also moves the teeth, orthognathic surgery is usually performed in conjunction with orthodontics so that the teeth are in proper position after surgery. It is more often performed in severe underbite cases. As a result, those who could not chew their food can now eat without difficulty and the patients who could not close their lips around their front teeth now can after the combined treatment of surgical orthodontics. In many cases an enhancement in the appearance can also be seen.
