DENTAL TOURISM IN JODHPUR

Jodhpur is the second largest desert city of Rajasthan after Jaipur. This city has got two nicknames, ‘Sun City’ and ‘Blue City’ for its unique characteristics. The name 'Sun City' is given after the bright, sunny weather of Jodhpur whereas, the name ‘blue city’ is derived from the blue painted houses located in the surroundings of the Mehrangarh Fort. Jodhpur is also referred to as the ‘gateway to Thar’ since the city is located on the border of the Thar Desert. This city was founded by Rao Jodha, the leader of the Rathore family, in the year 1459. Earlier, the city was known as ‘Marwar’; the current name was given after the city's founder, Rao Jodha, a Rajput chieftain. The following are the main attractions of Jodhpur:

Places to visit in Udaipur

MEHRANGARH FORT - The most magnificent fort in Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort. It is situated on a 150m high hill. Rao Jodha, the then chief of Rathore clan, constructed it in 1459. There are a number of attractions within the fort like several palaces, galleries, a museum, and temples and so on. The magnificent Mehrangarh Fort is the most majestic and one of the largest forts in India. The museum in the Mehrangarh fort is one of the finest museums in Rajasthan and certainly is the best laid out.

JASWANT THADA - The Jaswant Thada, located half way up the interminably long road that climbs onwards to the fort, is the traditional cremation ground of the rulers of Jodhpur. Taking pride of place amongst the ornamental gardens and chattris is the fabulous white marble memorial to Jaswant Singh II, built in 1899.

MANDORE - It was founded in the 6th century, and passed to the Rathore Rajputs in 1381 after a marriage alliance between a princess of the original founders, the Pratiharas, and the Rathode Raja, Rao Chandor. The historic town boasts several important monuments. The now ruined Mandore fort, with its thick walls and substantial size, was built in several stages and was once a fine piece of architecture. A huge, now ruined temple is a highlight of the fort. The outer wall of the temple depicts finely carved botanical designs, birds, animals and planets.

CHITAR PALACE (Ummaid Mahal) – It is built on the Chitar Hill and is made of red stone of Jodhpur and the famous marble of Makrana. It was built by Maharaja Ummaid Singh in 1948. It was designed by Sir H.C. Lanchester, president of Royal Institute of British architects. There is a large garden in front of the entrance gate of the palace.

SUR SAGAR PALACES - In the hill ranges a mile away from Jodhpur, Raja Sur Singh made a pond with beautiful gardens and palaces. These palaces are made on rectangular platforms made of white Makrana Marble. Two palaces opposite each other belong one each to ladies and gents.

RAI-KA-BAG PALACE - This palace is situated near Raika Bag palace railway station. It was constructed in 1663 by Hadiji, queen of king Jaswant Singh-I.

BIJOLAI PALACES - Approximately 11kms from Jodhpur city between the Kaylana hills, king Takhat Singh made a few palaces which are known as Bijolai Palaces. It is said that king Vijay Singh used to come to this place for hunting.

Lakes of Jodhpur

The Balsamand Lake - This lake is situated 8 kilometer from the city and was built by the Partihar King Balak Rao in the year 1159 AD. Nearby there is a beautiful garden and a palace.

Kaylana Lake - Located 8 km west of Jodhpur, Kaylana lake was constructed in 1872 by Pratap Singh. It is spread over 84 square kilometers' area.

Gulab Sagar - 150x90 m sized Gulab Sagar water storage was constructed by Gulab Rai in 1788, who was a mistress of Maharaja Vijay Singh. Other lakes in Jodhpur include Umed Sagar and Fateh Sagar lakes.

Temple of Kapedaji - The Jain temple of Kapedaji lies at the distance of 40 km from Jodhpur. The architecture of this temple is similar to that of the temples of Ranakpur.

Jodhpur is famous for various festivals, which are held throughout the year. The International Desert Kite Festival is held on the 14th day of January every year at the Polo Ground of the city. During this three day festival, kite flying competition is held in which kite flyers from all over the globe compete for the top slots. Moreover, during the occasion, the sky is dotted with colourful kites released by helicopters of the air force. Tourists can also enjoy the Marwar festival which is held in the month of Ashwin (September-October). This two day festival gives an opportunity to enjoy the folk music and dance of Rajasthan.
